The Art of Selling Your Handmade Work
It is true that most artist and crafters are their worst own enemies in marketing. Most of us including myself tend to lean more towards creating than creating a presense of self worth. We can clearly create wonderful products but the products can not stand alone. What sells is the over all apperance of a well maintained business person. We must rememeber the public is very much into visuals. And that includes the apperance of the vendor too. If you look like you are having a terrible time with a frown on your face. You will most likely not appeal to a potential customer. People in general love being around creative, upbeat individuals. It creates a balance of many needs. 1. A need to be noticed " Hey, look I am here" 2. A need to investigate, it is our nature. 3. A need to let themselves spend freely for even a short moment without consequences. 4. A need to feel involved and apperiated for their time. 5. A need to dream of doing something they love. Consumers are easy to sell to if you cater to their needs. Your needs are not important when a customer enters your store. Whether it be online or off. The customer is #1 It is old school and often forgotten in todays market place. Sure you might be able to make the most beautiful creations but without customers, you work is just a way of passing time. The art of selling your handmade creations is remembering you must play the game and make each person feel there needs are being met the moment they enter your store. A good practice is, start to look directly at people on the street and smile. Take a moment to say " Hi, and just a quick bit of small talk" This will get you used to opening up and focusing on someone else instead of your needs for a sale. The sale will come when you direct your energy towards another. Just my two cents,
